Rediscovering independence
June 2026
We recently helped Gemma, 48, from Birmingham towards the cost of an electric handbike wheelchair attachment.
Gemma has a complex medical history which impacts on her daily functioning and quality of life, and she is a mother to two disabled children.
This is what it meant to Gemma, in her own words:
"I have only had the handbike for a week, but it has made a huge difference to my life. I am now able to go to the shops from my house without getting in the car. I can go around the supermarket independently. I have already had the confidence to go to parks and on countryside walks on my own. It feels amazing to get out in the countryside and to not have to think about getting someone to assist me. I can’t wait to use it more. My 16 year old daughter also uses a wheelchair so we have enjoyed (for the first time in 5 years) leaving the house together and just wheeling around the streets. We have felt so trapped for such a long time, yet now we have been given freedom."
