We recently granted funding to Talbot House Support Centre, a charity based in Manchester, that provides support services for parent carers of people with severe learning disabilities.
Our funding was used to take 25 older parent carers on a day trip to Holmfirth, where they enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea at ‘The Wrinkled Stocking Tearoom’ (pictured below), which was themed with the TV show ‘Last of the Summer Wine’. It was a lovely sunny day, and afterwards the participants visited the many charity shops and sat outside enjoying the sunshine in the lovely town area.
They had some funding left over and, with agreement from us, used the remaining funds for an Over 80s Parent Carer Christmas Party held on 6th December. The party included a buffet, quiz, raffles and a Christmas sing-along (picture below). For this event they were supported by a fantastic team of volunteers on the day.
Feedback from a couple of the participants read:
"I was feeling quite low and anxious. The time spent with the wonderful staff from Talbot House was very comforting and enjoyable. The day was very well organised and everything was just perfect. It really helps to have these wonderful events to look forward to and enjoy being with like-minded people".
"The day trip to Holmfirth did me the world of good. At first I was undecided whether to go, but changed my mind and went along. It turned out to be a wonderful day, even though there were people there that I didn’t know. They were all so friendly and welcoming. This day reminded me ‘I am still alive’. Thank you Talbot House".
