Longford Park Community Centre received a grant from us in June this year. They were set up five years ago in Banbury to provide support and help for members of the local community, who, for a variety of reasons, may have felt isolated or in danger of further deterioration in terms of health and wellbeing.
Our grant was utilised to fund their Forever Fit programme, which was specifically designed to cater to members looking for a low-impact, accessible form of exercise. This initiative was particularly focused on providing chair-based exercises, allowing participants to engage in physical activity that supports strength, flexibility and mobility in a safe and supportive environment.
A total of 27 individuals took part in the programme. The programme was structured into two distinct parts:
1. Chair-Based Exercise Sessions: The first part of each session focused on chair-based exercises. These exercises included movements aimed at improving overall body strength, enhancing joint mobility, and increasing flexibility. Participants were guided through a series of seated and standing exercises that targeted different muscle groups, promoting better posture, balance, and coordination. These sessions were tailored to accommodate various fitness levels, ensuring that all participants could engage comfortably and effectively.
2. Social Engagement with Tea/Coffee: Following the exercise session, participants were invited to enjoy a social gathering over tea and coffee. This segment provided an opportunity for members to socialise, build a sense of community, and support each other's wellness journeys. The informal setting encouraged conversations, fostering new friendships and reducing social isolation among participants.
In their feedback to us Longford Park said that participants had reported noticeable improvements in their physical strength, flexibility, and mobility. The chair-based exercises were designed to accommodate varying fitness levels, making it accessible for everyone involved.
One participant said “I fully recommend the Forever Fit classes. They always demonstrate several levels of difficulty so that everyone can get something from the class. It was really fun and varied which kept my interest up. I have definitely seen an improvement in my strength which has never really happened before.”
Another highlighted the social benefit, saying, “The new programme means that I have the chance to see and socialise with people after not seeing people for 3 days.”
This demonstrates how the programme not only supported physical health but also contributed to the emotional and social well-being of its participants.
