Free tennis coaching sessions for the disabled

/ February 2022
Awards

Last July we awarded funding to Purley Bury Tennis Club towards the continuance of free professionally coached sessions for those with learning difficulties, autism, mental health conditions and wheelchair users - all looking to improve their tennis skills and mobility.

The club reported that the free coaching sessions for disabled players were split into two to improve social distancing and to allow for specific attention to be paid to attendees with more serious disabilities. Some autistic players required personal attention, and both of the Friday afternoon sessions were very well attended with up to 15-20 individuals attending.

The players have reported improving their ball skills, their confidence and their mobility directly as a result of taking part in the free coaching sessions. The disabled sessions also provide a great opportunity for social well-being and interaction with other members of the club, as those attending the sessions have access to the bar, where they can enjoy a drink and join in the activities held on a Friday evening. This is great for improving confidence and providing social opportunities that would otherwise prove difficult at times.

It's lovely to hear that our funding has made such a difference to these club members' lives.
