Improving physical and mental health

/ August 2024
The Unity Centre

At the beginning of this year we awarded a grant to The Unity Centre. Established in September 2019, The Unity Centre is based in Lewes, East Sussex and provides wellbeing classes, workshops and therapies for the whole community - regardless of age, disability, financial situation or other barriers.

The funding they received from us paid for the cost of a yoga teacher to deliver 8 sessions of their Move Freely, Breathe Easier yoga and support sessions for older people. They had 14 people attend each class, and over the 8 sessions they supported 20 individuals.

The sessions ran every Thursday morning for people over 65 who experienced mobility issues, disability, were in health recovery and were experiencing mental health issues. Some of their participants suffered with dementia, autism, with many experiencing loneliness and isolation.

The sessions helped to improve mental health, reduce stress and anxiety and helped their clients to build confidence by experiencing community connection and support. All of their clients reported that their wellbeing had improved thanks to the sessions. Their confidence had increased, symptoms of anxiety and depression had reduced and physical health has improved.

The feedback we received from the charity included some comments from their clients:

'Coming to Move Freely, Breathe Easier has made me feel less anxious and less isolated and alone.’

'I feel more confident and safer and I feel better able to spot signs of abuse.’

'The Unity Centre classes have a welcoming atmosphere and calming effect. This group has been very helpful as it provides community support through a group experience.’
