Place Prospectors delivering laughter
/ July 2026Place Prospectors CIC received a grant from us for activities, specifically the delivery of a funny film and comedy club. They deliver an arts and heritage project based in Druids Heath, the most deprived ward in Birmingham. The area has a large population of older residents and faces significant issues with social isolation.
For the comedy club they had seven people who learnt how to create their own stand-up comedy. They created three sketches over five rehearsals that were then put together as a comedy show. The comedy show was attended by 48 people.
The impact of the programming had a very positive effect on the confidence of the members who participated. The comedy club had an enormous effect on the well-being of all 7 participants. For six of the seven people it was an entirely new experience and the other person had done some stand up at work before, but they had to review their material in the context of a safe space, which was valuable learning.
They all created their own script, jokes and timing and worked as a group to feed back to each other. They also had to work on the material in between sessions and this gave them a sense of purpose. The actual show was a wonderful experience for everyone. The skills that had been honed shone through and although there were naturally some nerves beforehand everyone delivered a fantastic set.
In the CIC's feedback to us they highlighted what a joyful night it was, with so much positive feedback from the audience and the participants knew it was because of them that people had a good time. Laughter is the best medicine and they all had a very big dose!
